雅思口语:描述一件艺术品

Describe a piece of art that you have seen.
You should say:
when/where you saw it
what it looked like
what you liked about it
and explain whether you have seen any other type of art.

Well, the topic is a bit hard for me since I’m not keen on art at all. But still, I guess I can say something about one famous painting-- the Mona Lisa, an oil painting by the famous Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
Then, in reply to the first question of when and where I saw it, actually I’ve never seen the original painting, which is said to be on display in the French Louvre Museum. I remember the first time I saw it was when I was in primary school. It was a reproduction in the book on art history.
Talking about what it looked like, the picture was really amazing. The painting showed a woman looking out at the viewer with an “enigmatic smile”. When you look at Mona Lisa, no matter where you stand, you find her looking at you and smiling at you.
Continuing then with what I liked about it, I think its uniqueness really appeals to me. The Mona Lisa is perhaps the most famous piece in art history and is, perhaps, the most widely known portrait in the Western world. It’s so different from the paintings of Chinese style. It offers me both artistic enjoyment as well as some knowledge about western culture.

Finally, concerning whether I have seen any other type of art, I have to admit that nearly no, for I mentioned at the beginning that I have almost no interest in art, and thus I rarely have a chance to expose myself to any kind of artwork.

Speaking of art, I am really fond of Impressionism. So the works of a famous French painter Monet leave a quite deep impression on me. I saw one of his paintings named “Water Lilies” in Shanghai Art Gallery last year.

This painting showed the surface of a lily pond, using subtle pastel tones of blue, white, pink, purple, green and yellow. There was one lily pad in the lower left corner of the canvas, and several more from the center to the upper right. Each lily pad was a wide cluster of light green strokes, with brighter splotches of pink, yellow or white in the center representing flowers. The lily pads were floating on a body of water.

At the first sight of this painting, I was deeply attracted by its impressionistic style. The picture is completely filled with an impression of light and color reflected from the surface of a lily pond. “Water Lilies” was Monet's most important exploration in color use. Moreover, this painting was amazingly modern for its nearly abstract qualities.

In addition to paintings of Impressionism, I have also seen the sculptures of this style, like the works of Russell on the Internet. These two artists perfectly combine romanticism with modernism.
